The game likely brought up painful memories for the home crowd, seeing someone who tormented them in playoffs before returning once again. Reggie Miller’s History With the Knicks
In Miller’s 18 seasons playing with Indiana, he has faced the Knicks in the playoffs a total of six times. While both teams split the series 3-3, Miller was said to be the villain to Knicks fans, and the Basketball Hall of Famer has gone on to embrace this. The most memorable moments in the feud were documented in the 1994 and 1995 NBA playoffs.
In Game 5 of the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals, Reggie Miller put on a dazzling display with a massive 39 points, 25 of which were made in the fourth quarter. However, during that performance, Reggie traded words with director and Knicks superfan Spike Lee. Miller was reported to have made his infamous “choke” gesture at Lee during the win. This is one of the most iconic photos in NBA history. The Knicks would go on to win the series in seven games.
What Reggie Expected in Madison Square Garden
Reggie Miller said on the Monday before the game that it had never been a big deal whenever he called games in New York in the regular season. He did expect it to be somewhat hostile this time around. He stated that he’d likely hear mean chants, and a few choice and naughty words, but that he was good with that, as he was there to do a job.
Miller also stated that he would be surprised during the game if he didn’t hear the words “Reggie sucks” and that he would actually be a little hurt if he didn’t hear it, as, in his words, he kind of wanted to. Miller said that he and Lee have put their rivalry behind them.
